Trinidad's Mother of Carnival 2023 Guerilla Gang
Trinidad’s Top Designer, Robert Young defies all odds with his Mas band called “Vulgar Fraction”. The 2023 National Union of Freedom Fighters (NUFF) presentation pays tribute to the armed revolutionary Guerilla group which operated in Trinidad during the 1970s until it was stamped out by police. Costumes commemorate the lives of 18 members who were killed during an insurgency in the 1970s including a Freedom Fighter (pregnant woman named) Beverley Jones and Revolutionary Basil Davis.
MAS players modeled after CEPEP workers’ jumpsuits, with branches replacing the emblematic brush cutters. NUFF represents rebellion and the dream of a better Trinidad. “I was under ten when that happened, and I remember when Guy Harewood was killed. I remember when we did the presentation 70/50, Beverley and Basil Davis were pivotal people in the remembering of that 1970–1973 — I vowed that I would do something to honor their contribution.” — Robert Young
Young spoke of NUFF’s focus and highlighted the importance of remembering the lives lost and expressed the idea that Carnival is an opportunity to raise awareness of serious issues. Vulgar Fraction — modern-day rebels crossed the stage stunning the crowd with their standout attire of Red, Black and Green, of-the-earth Props and Weaponry, Mesh, and Metallics, accompanied by a Black Devil, Giant Eagle, and Giant Moko Jumbie.
Trinidad’s Carnival is known for its gaudy showcasing, parades, and electrifying energy. Thousands of people travel near and far to come to Port Spain for a trip around Queens Park Savannah. It is known of the “GREATEST Show on Earth” demonstrating culture, folklife, traditional Caribbean heritage and contemporary. Many looking to strut around hot and sexy in glorious feathers and sequins are surprised this year to see that group like Vulgar Fraction was able to captivate, bedazzle and provided that wow factor all while advocating for meaningful message.
