Little Research

The natural hair scene has truly built itself up on You-Tube from video testimonials of the Big Chop to video tutorials on everyday hairstyling for Black women sporting the newness of their natural hair. While these women are providing great tips on natural hair care, we have to consider just how unique each individual's hair is. Like a snowflake with infinite geometric patterns that differ from one another so does our coil differ from that of another's.

With that being said, we want to encourage you to closely examine your hair care patterns and the products that you use while tending to these You-Tube tutorials. First and foremost consider the way in which you know your hair to work best.

For example: I personally have wavy and thick, but super fine hair. So my hair works best with less use of product. It also dries out quickly, so I draw extra attention to the end strands while styling and avoid overheating with blow dryers.

Secondly, consider the type of products you used on a daily basis. Closely examine its ingredients and maybe even do a little research to see whether it's more helpful or harmful. While they've begun to offer lines of Vegan hair products, realistically no product can be perfectly pure, free of alcohols, additives, etc. But we can slowly alter our hair diet by using products that are more sustainable and healthy.

Via these You-Tube tutorials Marley Twists often call for the use of gel to seal that natural hair into the weave, prevent breakage, and of course lay the edges…
Great.

But actually not so great! Even by using the suggested brand, Eco-Styling Gel w/Olive Oil or Argan Oil these gels contain main ingredient called:

Sodium Hydroxymethylglycinate

It's a skin irritant (scalp, nape, temple, etc.) in high doses causing stinging, burning and reddening; even before it becomes suitable for use it goes through a manufacturing process involving several other harmful chemicals…..does this sound like a reliable ingredient for a product that market itself as organic? all-natural?
NO.

Alternative Products for Marley Twists
  • Coconut Oil
  • ORGANICS by Africans Best Horse Tail and Rosemary Pomade
  • Organic Root Stimulator Olive Oil Lotion
